Comments: Born in Ipswich in 1925, Tom Johnson demonstrated from an early age a physical prowess which was to lead him to success in a wide range of sports. He represented Ipswich at Rugby League, played inter-varsity and inter-service Rugby Union, and even played Australian Rules in inter-service competition during the war
During his service career he performed a variety of roles. He spent more than two years as manager of RAAF Radio at Butterworth, Malaysia; he served as Public Relations Officer for four years at Wagga and Amberley bases; he established and edited a newspaper at the Technical Training School at Wagga; he designed and implemented courses in a wide range of areas – from English Expression to international affairs to chemical warfare
In helping to protect young apprentices playing Rugby Union against old sweats he earned the nickname “Punchy” which was later changed to “Bronco” (after Bronco Johnston) when he took charge of RSTT’s boxing team.
