Comments: This book traces Hilton’s life from the dairy farm at Mt. George in the middle of the Manning Valley, through adolescence in a small country town where he reveals himself as having something of a larrikin streak, to the War in which he served in the RAAF and having passed through WW2 to live in the city where he worked as a manufacturing jeweller.
Hilton served as an RAAF fitter in New Guinea during WW2. He comments on the attitudes of the Americans and the civilians, and records the ‘get on with the job’ philosophy of most Australians servicemen – bitch about it, but get on with the job!
During the war, Hilton manufactured countless ornamental pieces from crashed planes and sold them to the Americans, “We had the skills, they had the money”.
