Comments: The detailed history of the Australian militia battalions in the South West Pacific Area between 1941 and 1945. The militia infantry battalions were involved in heavy fighting against the Japanese and were instrumental in the Australian victories during the Kokoda Campaign and also at places such as Milne Bay and Shaggy Ridge.
The author enlisted in the militia forces in July 1937 and was posted to the 56th Battalion. This battalion was later transferred to the Riverina District and the author then joined the 55th/53rd Infantry Battalion. When the 53rd Infantry Battalion received it’s own identity, the author remained with the 55th Battalion until he was wounded at Sanananda in 1945.
