Sampson, who came from Launceston, Tasmania saw service during the Boer War with the South African Constabulary and later end up in the 92nd (Launceston) Infanttry Regiment prior to World War I. He was close friends with Australia’s most decorated of World War I – Henry “Mad Harry” Murray.
