Researching Your World War One Ancestors – A Guide to researching Australian servicemen and women who served in the First AIF by David Wilson

Format: Digital Download (E-Book) – Now Available.

Comments: The centenary years of World War One, or the Great War of 1914-18, are rapidly approaching.  A number of nations from both sides of that conflict are preparing to commemorate a series of events to recall their national contributions.  From the Australian perspective, governments at various levels will be sponsoring community-based activities all around the country, as well as several keynote events in Turkey, France and Belgium where the bulk of Australians served with the First AIF.

On a more personal level, more and more Australians are looking into their family histories.  The next few years will see an even bigger surge of interest in researching World War One soldiers than is already occurring.  These investigations are made easier with the widespread use of computer technology and the increasing availability of digitised historical records.  Regimental Books has made a commitment to the development and dissemination of eBooks and associated social media products.  We are hoping to soon have a large range of military history titles in electronic format: unit histories, collector’s guides and research guides to just name a few.  It is an exciting time to be at the leading edge of these developments.

In line with this philosophy of promoting on-line resources, Regimental Books is delighted to have secured the services of David Wilson, principal of AIF Research Services to produce this research guide to help you in your own research.  David is a published author, historian and WW1 researcher in his own right, as well as being a part-time battlefield tour guide.  His special area of expertise, gained over many years of study, is the interpretation of sometimes obscure military jargon found in service records and contemporary diaries.  Having access to documents is one thing – working out what they really say is another.

We hope you enjoy your own research projects.  There is always something new to be found and other resources to check.  If you have any queries or suggestions, please do not hesitate to contact David directly or either of us here at the Regimental Books.

We highly recommend this research guide to those of you who are dedicated in keeping alive the courage and sacrifice of those men and women who served in the First AIF.
