Comments: The letters written by 1565 Corporal John Bathurst (Jack) Ison of the 3rd Battalion AIF during World War One.

Formerly a farmer and a labourer, Cpl Ison enlisted at Liverpool, NSW, on 9 December 1914 and as a member of the 3rd Reinforcements he embarked from Sydney, NSW, aboard HMAT Seang Choon (A49) on 11 February 1915. 

He served at Gallipoli and later on the Western Front where he was wounded in action on 27 July 1916 during the battle of Pozieres. After recovering, he returned to his unit and was promoted to Lance Corporal on 22 November 1916 and then to Corporal on 6 May 1917. He was killed in action at Passchendaele on 10 November 1917, aged 21 years.
