Comments: The history of the 36th Battalion AIF during World War I. This is the long awaited first-time published history of the battalion.
The history of the 36th Battalion AIF takes the reader through the raising and training period then the move to France and battles of the Western Front. The units Battle Honours include Messines, Ypres, Polygon Wood, Broodseinde, Poelcappelle, Passchendaele and the Somme (1918).
Before it was disbanded in early 1918 it took part in the great battle to stop the German spring offensive.
For months the men had alternated between rest, labouring and more training, and then, the German army launched a big attack. Thrown into the defensive line, the battalion was deployed near Villers-Bretonneux to help defend the approaches to Amiens. Then, during a counterattack at Hangard Wood they helped to stop the Germans.
