A world war paratrooper had to be a special type of soldier fearless, quick-witted and perhaps something of a braggart. This attitude well suited his particularly hazardous kind of soldiering. Before entry to this elite unit could be gained the applicant had to be certain height and weight as well as being physically fit. Some fighting experience preferable. The parachute battalion members were a motley lot, something of a foreign legion, perhaps this description was not far wrong. This book describes episodes and events within the battalion, seen more from the ranks of an ordinary soldier, rather than from an official view. Many incidents recounted here come from personal experiences and are unrecorded in annals of official history, but they are authentic, etched forever in the memories of those who were concerned. Disbanded in January 1946 the Australian parachute Battalion has never been reformed. The red beret and blue wings once so proudly worn by its members have all but vanished into the mist of a forgotten past.
