Comments: Recollections of the time spent by an Australian youth in the RAAF as a member of the Empire Air Training Scheme. The chaos of”crewing up” resulted in the formation of a crew with the average age of twenty.

They served with 500 and 150 Bomber Squadrons in a battle zone over 12,000 miles from Australia.  It is a matter of historical record that 47,293 men were killed in operations over enemy held Europe in WWII. Fortunate enough to survive a “tour” of 36 ops, it tells of dangers, romance, adventure and courage while enduring the hardships. For the participants, the inward sense of having done their best to perform unpleasant duties was sufficient reward.

The Empire Air Training Scheme (EATS), was a massive, joint military aircrew training program created by the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, during the Second World War.

It remains the single largest aviation training program in history and was responsible for training nearly half the pilots, navigators, bomb aimers, air gunners, wireless operators and flight engineers who served with the Royal Air Force (RAF), Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF), Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) and Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) during the war.
