Comments: Packed with over 100 mostly unpublished photographs, this authoritative and meticulously researched book represents perhaps the most well presented and wide ranging factual account of the air war in the South West Pacific theatre of war for the first months of the conflict as it was fought from Australia. Now a scarce and highly desirable title.

It is not legend but fact that American bombers went into action with painted broom sticks for guns, that Australian training planes were prepared to dive bomb Japanese aircraft carriers and that Allied aircraft were assembled in such a hurry in SE Queensland during the opening weeks of war, that they were flown into action with vital parts missing.

This is the story as told by the men themselves who flew the combat missions in the Philippines, the Netherlands East Indies and Northern Australia between December 1941 and April 1942 and why the decisions were made to send them into action in obsolete, worn out or ill prepared planes against impossible odds. Some of the participants have names that are household ones but most have never before told their stories.  Now their deeds have at last been recorded and their rightful place in the war history of the Pacific conflict, earned by their exploits and sacrifices, has been documented.
